Hand consists of small bones of the fingers (phalanges) and the long bones (metacarpals). Any breakage in these bones is termed as hand fracture.
Cause of Hand Fracture:
Twisting injury OR a fall OR a crush injury OR direct contact in sports.
Symptoms of Hand Fracture:
Severe pain, tenderness and swelling over the hand, inability to move fingers, depressed knuckle, finger crosses over its neighbour when making a partial fist and deformity of the hand along with shortening of finger.
Treatment for Hand Fracture:
Most of the hand fractures can be realigned by manipulation without surgery. A splint, brace or cast is applied for immobilizing the injured hand. But some of the fractures may require surgery to put the bones into alignment and secure them in place.
